The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
