Uche Ignites Comfortable Crystal Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Without star figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a commanding win that all but secures them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be enough to seal direct passage to the last 16, particularly after a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a chance for several Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, scoring for the second game in succession.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season were outmatched even for a mostly rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Control Established from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee waved away the appeals.
The formerArsenal man did not have wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for two robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring his very first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
